2012 development scholarships: info for applicants and parents

When in 2011 our secretary, Tony Davis, died he kindly left the club a legacy. Tony was an enthusiastic supporter of youth sport. The club has decided, therefore, to use this legacy – together with a collection from players and supporters – to fund scholarships to support the development of new players. Each scholarship runs for two years.

Q. What do the scholarships offer?

The main benefit is that they will offer ‘scholars’ intensive, personalised, coaching. Our lead coach is English Cricket Board Level 2 coach Merrick Fuller, who won the Sky Sports Young Coach of the Year Award in 2008. Coaching begins in early March, enabling players to go into the season well prepared. A further benefit is that our scholars may play for the club without paying match fees or tea money.

Q. Who can apply?

The programme is designed for cricketers who are keen to develop through coaching and who wish to gain early experience playing in the Cambridgeshire Junior League.

Q. How can I apply and by when?

Please complete our application form – which may be downloaded from BGCC application form 001 – and return it by e-mail or post (the addresses are given on the form itself). The deadline is 26 Feb 2012 – but we would welcome early applications.

Q. What is the Burrough Green like as a club?

The club is flourishing. We pride ourselves on our friendly atmosphere. We enter two teams in the Cambs Junior League and one team in the Bottisham Midweek League. We play on an attractive ground in the middle of the village and have a good pitch, which is fair to both batsmen and bowlers.

Q. How and when will scholarships be awarded?

We’ll make the awards in late February / early March. We will invite promising applicants to meet us and play in a trial net. We are looking for players who (a) are keen to learn and develop, (b) can make a contribution to one of our league sides, (c) are keen to be involved in the club and represent it with credit. We will contact all applicants.

2012 match vs Newmarket Trainers

The 2012 season – let alone the end of the season – seems a long way off but we can announce that the annual fixture vs Newmarket Trainers has been scheduled for September 2nd.

Appointments for 2012

At the AGM (4 Nov) the following appointments were made for the 2012 season.

1st XI captain: Alasdair Campbell.

1st XI vice-captain: Mark Ward.

2nd XI captain: Roger Martin.

Midweek captain: Luke Williamson.

Match fees in 2012

At the AGM (4 Nov) it was noted that the increase in match fees in 2011 had contributed significantly to the club’s bank balance.

It was decided not to increase fees for weekend league matches. They will remain at £10 for waged and £5 for unwaged (teas inclusive).

For friendlies the match fee will be £5.

For midweek evening matches the fee will be £3.

Players are requested to bring the correct change for paying match fees.

Awards for the 2011 season

1st XI batting, bowling, catching, and player of the year: Ryan Tripp.

2nd XI batting: Bob Phillips.

2nd XI bowling: Casey Phillips.

2nd XI player of the Year: Alan Nickerson.

Long-distance commuter of the year: Jonny Way.

Clubman of the Year: Luke Williamson.

Position of the wicket

The club has decided not to use the two wickets nearest the road in order to reduce the incidence of the ball going across the road.

Tony Davis: memorial fund
